When I bring in my computer, do I need to bring all the cables and stuff?
No, not for desktops, the tower is all we need.
For laptops, we will need the power cord.
It’s all about the Windows product key. This is how Microsoft ensures that your copy of Windows is genuine. This product key can normally be found on a sticker on your computer case. As long as we have a valid product key, we can then go online and find the proper drivers to download and complete the reformatting process.
Where the CD helps is in providing us with the drivers. If we do not have to go online and search for your specific drivers to download, it saves us time in-shop which in turn saves you money.
* Customers should note that Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access & PowerPoint) is not a part of the Windows Operating System. We will need the Office CD for re-installation.
Only your files, that is data you created, can be recovered and transferred. The success of the recovery process depends on the condition of the media storage device. Generally, the majority of your data can be recovered, however certain cases may require a more intense type of data recovery.
Programs on the other hand, the applications used to create your data, cannot be recovered or moved from one computer to another. Programs need to be reinstalled either by downloading them again or from their original CD.
The fact is no anti-virus, no matter how highly rated will catch everything. Often times people pay for anti-virus programs and think they are forever immune. This is not the case. Although some anti-virus software does update automatically, it often requires a yearly renewal that may have expired. Most programs call for the user to manually run weekly updates. If you don’t run the scans on a weekly basis, you are at risk.

Although Computer Geeks does provide in-home service, for this type of work it is highly recommended to bring the system into one of our locations. Virus cleanups and operating system reloads, although generally quoted at 1.5 to 2 hours of in-shop labor, actually take quite a while longer. These jobs often involve mumerous diagnostic tests, virus scans, updates to download, etc which can extend the real-time of the service up to 6 hours or more.
In-home, technicians are forced to essentially watch the bar go across the screen while these processes run their course and real-time charges apply. Whereas in-shop, they can work on other jobs in the meantime and customers are only charged for time spent actively servicing their computer. Therfore, it is always more cost-effective to bring systems into Computer Geeks for this type of work.
